September 4, 2019Amman, 4th September 2019 – The Amman International Film Festival- Awal Film (AIFF) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting film submissions for its inaugural edition in Amman. Submissions are open from the 3rd of September 2019 until the 31st of January 2020 through its website: www.aiff.jo.
The inaugural edition of Amman International Film Festival– Awal Film, organised under the umbrella of the Royal Film Commission – Jordan (RFC), will take place from the 13th until the 18th of April 2020.
The festival is accepting films for its competitive sections reserved to Arab filmmakers and that include:
- Feature-Length Narrative Competition acknowledging first-timers in the fields of: directing, scriptwriting, cinematography, editing and acting;
- Feature-Length Documentary Competition for first-time directors;
- Short Film Competition for first-time directors in the narrative, experimental and animation genres.
The programming will focus on innovation and creativity in the art of filmmaking.
An international section will showcase non-Arab debut films from all over the world. In addition, the “First & Last Film” section will pay tribute to two renowned directors – one Arab and one international – screening their first and last films in their presence.
An international jury made up of distinguished professionals in the film industry will select the winners in each category and the audience will get the opportunity to vote for its favorite films.
AIFF will also be the setting of the first edition of its industry arm, the “Amman Film Industry Days” (AFID), taking place from Wednesday April 15th to Friday April 17th, 2020. AFID will host master classes and seminars with renowned directors and film stars, as well as discussions with producers, financiers and distributors revolving around “talk of the hour” topics on cinema. It will also hold pitching sessions for projects in development and/or in post-production.
The distinctive edge of this festival lies in the recognition of various talents involved in the making of a movie and in the focus on promising Arab and international filmmakers. AIFF strives to create a community where passionate filmmakers, film buffs, artists, producers, financiers and more, can gather for a few days to exchange their unique experiences and build a coveted and sustainable talent base in Jordan and the Arab World.
The aim, according to its President, Princess Rym Ali, is to “develop and promote an Arab cinema that reflects the creativity of the region and tackles the issues that are prevalent today, while providing an accessible cultural event to film lovers in Jordan.” She added: “We are building on the cumulative success of the RFC’s screenings for the past twelve years.”
The festival will be held in the Abdali district, which has been chosen as a strategic partner for the event, thanks to its unique facilities that include state-of-the-art screens, many luxurious hotels, a huge shopping mall and a pleasant pedestrian area lined with cafés and restaurants. A cooperation agreement has been signed between Raja Gargour, a member of the Festival’s Board of Directors, and Bater Kardan, the CEO of Abdali Investment & Development group to ensure that the participants benefit from the festival’s multiple events, while enjoying the facilities around them in a comfortable environment.
