Steven Markovitz has over 25 years of experience in producing and distributing feature films and documentaries. He has worked with over 150 directors from 30 African countries on films that have screened at festivals including Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, Toronto and Venice, and sold worldwide.
Markovitz co-founded the Encounters South African International Documentary Festival in 1999. He is a founding executive committee member of the Independent Producers’ Organization of South Africa. Since 2018, Steven has been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In 2015, Markovitz co-founded the immersive media non-profit Electric South. In 2023, he was knighted by the Burkina Faso government for his contribution to African Cinema. Markovitz has advised the governments of Namibia and South Africa on film policy and has served on juries and selection panels in countries including USA, Lebanon, Holland, Germany, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and South Africa.
