Bert Rebhandl was born in 1964 in Upper Austria, where he grew up and attended school. In 1983, he moved to Vienna to study at university, focusing on German Literature alongside Theology and Philosophy. He left university without obtaining a degree to pursue a career in journalism. In 1993, he began writing for the daily newspaper Der Standard. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin to continue his work as a freelance film and cultural critic, primarily contributing to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), one of Germanyβs leading highbrow dailies.
In 2009, together with Simon RothΓΆhler, he co-founded CARGO Film Medien Kultur, a quarterly magazine dedicated to a diverse range of topics and perspectives on film and visual culture. He has published several books on Orson Welles, Jean-Luc Godard, the sitcom βSeinfeldβ and the classic film βThe Third Manβ. He also edited a volume on the Western genre.
