Christian Frei

Swiss director and producer Christian Frei is considered one of today’s most innovative and compelling documentary filmmakers. “War Photographer” (2001) was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 74th Academy Awards. “The Giant Buddhas” (2005), “Space Tourists” (2009), "Genesis 2.0” (2018) and “Saudi Runaway” (2020) were screened in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where he won the World Cinema Directing Award in 2010. From the very start of his career, Frei established a reputation as an exacting documentarist, with a perfect grasp of his subjects. His films are considered to be humanistic and universal, as much as subtle and insistent. In 2026, Frei received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Documentary Film Festival ZagrebDox in Croatia. From 2010 to 2022 he held the position of President of the Swiss Film Academy.
